GORILLA ATTACKER JUDGED INSANE
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA. A man who, of all places, jumped into a Melbourne Zoo gorilla closure and attacked the apes was committed to a mental institution last Tuesday.
Zoo staff said the 27-year-old man chased Betsy, an adult female, while making monkey sounds and beating his chest with his fists. The man punched and kicked the poor terrified primate and drove a five-year-old baby male, Mzuri, into a corner. He was finally trapped and captured by the police.
The attacker, from the southern state of Tasmania, apparently arrived in Melbourne on Monday and went straight to the zoo, shouting, "I've come here to kill a gorilla!" He told the police that "voices" instructed him to attack the animals. A police spokeswoman said that after being examined by doctors, the man was committed under the Mental Health Act.
It has been reported that the zoo staff are keeping the gorillas under observation in case any psychological damage was caused by the attack. Modified from a report by The Associated Press.
