Read the passage and choose the correct answer to each question.
Have you ever thought that within a single afternoon, you could lose your sense of security? That happened to me, and I’m still paying for the consequences of somebody else’s action. The feeling of security and serenity, that everyone should have, is often brutally taken away for just a few dollars. Unfortunately, this happens again and again all over the world, and it is hard for the victims of criminal actions to find their serenity again.
It was just a day like any other. My best friend and I were in her shop. I had been out shopping that day and I’d decided to go and see her. It was the middle of the afternoon and we were both happy and making plans for the weekend.
Suddenly a man entered the shop. There was something about him that was strange. He didn’t look like one of her usual customers. However, my friend welcomed him politely and asked if she could help him. He had something in his hand in his pocket. We couldn’t see what it was. He ordered us to go to the back of the shop and he pulled his hand out of his pocket. We were shocked to see he had a gun!
We were so afraid that we could hardly understand what was happening. Naturally, we obeyed him. The really terrifying thing was that he seemed so calm and so used to this kind of action. “Don’t say a single word and do exactly as you are told,” he said. He gave us precise orders and kept telling us that he could kill us at any time. He took the money from the cash desk, from our bags and then asked for our jewellery. We gave him everything he wanted. He was unemotional while he was bringing his “job” to a conclusion. Finally, after a few more interminable minutes, he left.
From the moment that man walked out of that shop, I have not been the same person. I do not feel safe. I often check to see if someone is following me and am careful not to have valuables with me when I’m out of my house. I now avoid certain parts of town where I went without problems before.
Perhaps I am being silly. After all, apart from being robbed, nothing happened to my friend and me. We were lucky. However, that man seemed ready to kill us as though we were insects if we didn’t obey him. This possibility has stayed with me since that horrible day. Now I am sure only of one fact; I blame this man, not for having taken my jewellery, but for having taken away my innocence.
